I recently installed Mandrake 7.2 (yeah i know.. its outdated). Anyways seemingly for no reason while i'm just browsing around in X, KDE or GNOME, suddenly my HD will just start grinding full speed ahead. Xmms stops playing, and I can't move my mouse or do anything excpet watch my HD grind. I let it go once and i went for 20 minutes w/out any signs of stopping. After doing it a couple times, though, i THINK it may be Konqueror causing the error cause when I don't use it, i don't seem to get the error... Any Ideas?

There are some processes that are scheduled through cron to run at different times of the day, week etc. One of those is updatedb which updates the locate database. This should only run once a day and only take a few minutes.

Have you checked the processes when this is happening?

Maybe you have a crond job thats searching the entire drive or something? Try turning off crond and see if it still happens.
