Hey has anybody had any luck getting this to work. BeOS for Linux has been released, I downloaded the tar.gz file, did the tar -zxvf thing and my system freaked out. Or at least that's what I determined was happening.

It began to unpack the file and then stopped doing anything, the HD light on my box stayed on as if it were accessing the Hard Drive but I could hear no activity at all from it.

Maybe I did something wrong but that BeOSrLinux.tar.gz file just wouldn't work.

Any suggestions?

The following line is a total lie:

If BeOS 5 PE for Linux is anything like the one for Windows, it will be unpacking a 500 meg image.be file. So that may takew awhile.

Did the system freeze up completely? Did ctrl-C or ctrl-Z work? You may just have to wait for it to finish unpacking all the files.

No it didn't actually lock up or anything, what it did do was create a BIG lag in everything in the system. It began to unpack the file and then stopped doing anything.

The HD light was on continuously but there was little or no HD activity at all. I interpret this as an Oh **** kinda situation but it might be completely normal.

Good point though, maybe I should put my faith in the system and trust that its doing exactly what it needs to do. I'd love to be able to boot into BeOS from Linux without having to switch HD's and boot up Windoze.

You don't have to boot in Windows in order to boot BeOS. Create a BeOS boot disk. When you reboot the computer (or turn it on) have the boot disk in diskette drive. BeOS will load. No windows is needed except for the initial install.
