only things i've done on this box was configure X (which doesn't start up automatically), and comment out everything in inetd.conf. i've done absolutely nothing else but scroll through HOW-TOs on here.

is there something in inetd.conf i should left in there?

i'm not even sure ohw to go about tracking own this problem.

after loggin in, i shutdown and did a cold boot, then it booted up fine.

trying logging in, plus fiddling with stuff (started up x, exited, ran a stupid perl script, yada yada. then gave it the 3 fingered salute... booted up fine.

argh. well, i dunno. if someone can tell me what to look for, that'd be nice. or just tell me that my box is possessed. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/eek.gif s'no big deal, will either nuke this partition, or install another drive to boot to this weekend, gonna try out some other distros.

Just a guess but if it reboots during startup, could it somehow be going into runlevel 6 during startup? Check out to see which script it is running before it reboots, and then take a look at that script to see if there's anything amiss there. Check some of the scripts in /etc/rc.d that's the scripts that run at bootup, chances are it's something in there. Especially rc.S(system initialization) and rc.M(it's run when the system goes multi-user). Anyway, if you can figure out which script is causing the problem then you can go into /etc/rc.d and check it out and see what the problem is.

Hope that helps. I'm leaving work so if that doesn't make any sense hopefully someone else will be here to answer any question.

i could not dependably reproduce the problem. so no freaking telling. maybe some wires in the box going bad. maybe it's gremlins.
