I've recently intstalled Mandrake 8
it works fine from the command line, but when i try to start X (either from run level 5 or using startx) the GUI screen comes up, everything seems to load alright and at the last moment it bombs out to the command line with 'waiting for Xserver to shut down'.

my monitor(iiyama)/video card(Diamond viper 550) are both supported and work ok (I get the groovy penguins when i test in Xdrake)

i've run xf86config again but with no success

has anyone any ideas on what the problem might be?

where would i find the full log file?

do i need to copy the xinitrc file to my home directory and edit it?

thanks in advance.

look further up on the screen when X shuts down. Is there any kind of an error message anywhere?

no errors at all- thats the puzzling thing

after i xconfiged again the last few lines were:

'initializing logs XF86 SVGA server symbols
successfully loaded nvdriver
Riva GLX Version 1.2
waiting for Xserver to shut down
GLX extensions reset!'

but subsequently i havn't had this, just 'waiting for xserver to shut down'
