Now...that's how many times I guess I'll have to reinstall Linux.
I tried to install XFree86 4.01 and now I can't get into GUI.
I backed up files and everything.
I tried re-installing the previous version but nothing changes.
It sure seems like that should have done it...but it didn't.
I'm not sure I like this "re-install" every time something doesn't go perfectly...

Marek,
I read the DOC's...really I did. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
However, after I installed the prg I noticed a blurb that my video card wasn't supported.
I understand how it wouldn't work WITH Xfree86 4.01, but I don't understand why it isn't working even though I copied ALL the files back the way they were.
I did a complete recursive directory backup of both the /etc/X11 and the /usr/X11R6 directories.
I have an ATI "All-in-Wonder 128 Pro" video card. It worked fine before.
I posted the log in Technical in "Lost GUI"

Ummmm.
Must you have X 4.01? Why not install 3.x?
Also, no need to reinstall everything, just X.

This page (http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/peanut/pkgs/XF86-4.0.1/READ.TXT) is the instructions for installing/removing XF86 4.01 (from the Peanut Linux web page). It lists what to do to backup your current X setup, as well as what to do to remove 4.01 if it doesn't work. I don't know if these instructions are 100% applicable to all Linux distro's, but there may be some new info there that you haven't seen before.

Well guy, I know exactly how you feel. Within a week, both Mandrake 7.1 and SuSE 7.0 displayed glaring flaws on my machine.
Now that I have WINDOWS 2000 Professional on my machine, things are good 2 go. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/cool.gif

glaring flaws due to your faulty hardware no less.
Goughmezz, why do you even try? You are exactly the kind of person that thinks linux sucks because in one try, you can't get it installed, or fix a problem.
If you want to take that mentality, I dunno how you really function in the real world. Do you expect things handed to you? If you can't go forth and do for yourself, then how will you survive?

Q: How many existentialists does it take to screw in a lightbulb?
A: Two. One to screw it in and one to observe how the lightbulb itself symbolizes a single incandescent beacon of subjective reality in a netherworld of endless absurdity reaching out toward a maudlin cosmos of nothingness.

I thought I did that when I replaced the directories? The Xfree86 DOC's warned me to do that...and I did. Unfortunately it's not doing the trick.
Remember...I have to do everything from the command line now.

How much is Microsoft paying you to advertise? I want in on the deal. I could use some extra cash to buy a GeForce 2 Ultra (to be used on the Windows machine, ya hear that Bill?)

G,
I wonder what kind of personality flaw directs a person to nag at people who are simply wanting to give another thing a go...
I divorced my first wife for exactly that kind of thing. If everything didn't go 100% her way then the couldn't let it go. She had to ***** and ***** and ***** till the only recourse was to let her wallow in her hatefullness all by herself.
Thank God that my second wife of 20+ years isn't like that...
Go away...let people live their own lives.

Yeah!..I know. I really do understand but this is getting old.
I had just done a complete update of all the Mandrake fixes, and did a successful install of VMware...all that was left was the tweaking.
Then I printed out and followed the 4.01 install to the letter...including backing up my directories.
BTW...I like Midnight Commander. I see it's almost exactly Norton Commander or FAR...all great programs. I don't know what I'd do without it. Is that in all Linux distributions?

I have just printed that out and will follow it to the letter.
However...I think I already did most of those things.
LATER:
Uhhh?...that would have been great if I had seen that BEFORE I did the install. Howwever, it looks like it was meant to do IN PREPARATION for the install.
I did learn an easier way to backup directories though...I did it without compressing anything. I have the full, UN-compressed backups. (I have plenty of space.)
