Hi there,

I'm trying to load RedHat Linux 6.2 on a virgin (no o/s installed)
e-machines celeron 633Mhz (64MB/20GB). This has graphics and sound built
into the motherboard using an Intel chipset. On Boot, BIOS says Intel 8xx
Chipset Video Bios - 1MB, VGA memory is shared with regular RAM.

I've loaded Linux and can get into the command shell but can't get X-Windows
to run. i had to run the linux setup in text mode as graphics mode kept crashing which is obviously related.

When I run startx I get error :

SVGA PCI : intel Unknown chipset (0x7121) rev 3, memory 0xf80000000,
0xf4000000
-- SVGA : unable to open /dev/agpgart: No such device

I do have another identical e-machines PC running Windows ME, so if anyone knows how I could find out more info on the graphics chips from that please tell me - I did try running MSD on the windows machine as suggested in the linux manual, but that program wasn't found - must have been ditched after win 98.

If anyone can help, i'd be really graetful,

Thanks,

Glenn

those have the infamous i810 chipset, initially didn't work in linux at all, i think, probably won't work with rh 6.2

is there a reason you can't get rh 7.1 and try it?

the redhat hardware compatibility list (http://hardware.redhat.com/hcl/genpage2.cgi?pagename=7.1&statpage=7.1-ivideo) says
The i810e cards do not work correctly with the drivers included in Red Hat Linux 7.

Beta drivers may be found at: http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxinstal.htm

good luck! :)

nuts, that link is out of date :(

the intel web site says
Drivers for the Intel® 810 chipset and the Intel® 810E chipset work with

Windows* Me (Millennium Edition)
Windows 9x
Windows NT* 4.0
Windows 2000
Linux* operating systems
still looking

ok check this link (http://appsr.cps.intel.com/scripts-df/filter_results.asp?strOSs=39&strTypes=DRV%2CUTL&ProductID=178&OSFullName=Linux*&submit=Go%21)

TYhanks ever so much, I was using 6.2 because I got it free with a book about Linux, but I'll get 7.1 tomorrow.

Thanks for the links.

Best Wishes,

Glenn

There's also the NHF on i810 here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/i810intel.html) that may help.
