Don't seem to have dexter. What can I use to automatically configure x for me? XF86Setup doesn't work for the new x, and dexter doesn't seem to come with the task-x-window-system package anymore. XFree86 -configure doesn't seem to do it for me either. What can I do?

Dexter came with it for me.
I just installed it the other day.

Actually you can use xf86config. You just use it to generate an XF86Config file and then rename it (cp XF86Config XF86Config-4 in the /etc/X11 directory). This worked for me, although it is somewhat inadequate and some tweaking of the file can be required.
Nvidia's drivers' installation routine requires such a renamind manuever and yet it is never mentioned in the installation documentation.

Dexter is now dexconf . You can also use `dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xfree86`
