I'm having the same problem with Mandrake 7.1. I haven't really had a chance to monkey with it much yet (I have to work this weekend), but if I figure anything out, I'll let you know. Maybe it's a similiar problem in both distros...

Slackware won't setup sound for you. Check out /etc/rc.d/rc.modules. What kind of soundcard do you have?

I have a sb live value, with the module for my sound card in /etc/rc.d/rc.modules uncommented. That gave me sound for my cd player, but no system sounds. Not where my puter is and don't want to give you the wrong module I uncommented. will get that later when home. It worked in Suse 6.4.

I have the emu10k1 module, but I know now the problem is with my permissions. Sys sounds work fine in root, just not for users.

Where do I change the permissions so users will have sys sounds?

chmod 666 /dev/dsp
chmod 666 /dev/mixer

that'll do it for ya

users already have permission for the mixer and chmod 666 /dev/dsp did nothing.

What is the /dev/dsp file for?

Thanks Phuzon, that did work.......everyone has sounds.
