Howdy folks. Thanks in advance for helping out. Not just me but everyone, i'm a mod on a pretty hot board (20k hits a day) and god it's a pain in the bum bum! But anyhow thanks for reading this. First off i've got a few problems. When i get into my linux (red hat 7.1) my startx command DOES NOT work. I've reinstalled twice now. It gives me a "fatal server error" Any ideas on a way around this would be appreciated. Second problem. My monitor will blink at random, sometimes it's ok for 15 minutes then it'll start blinking like a bat outta hell. The error message is says is
INIT: ID "x" respawning too fast" disabled for 5 minutes.
Again thanks for the help i'm sure i'll be posting here much more often :)
Thanks again.

hello,
You have a problem with the setting of your video card / moniter - either you are running the wrong xserver or you are trying to have too high a color depth/resolution, i.e. 2000x1600 at 32 bit color with an old 512 k isa video card. both problems with be solved by configuring xfree86 properly. i like to use xf86config ratehr than Xconfigurator. knowing what type of video card and its amount of memory may be helpful too. when i have problesm like this it set it to the lowset resolution possible with 8 bit color.

Hi there. I probably won't be able to help you with your problem but for others to help, they'll need to know a few things.
What type of video card do you have?
Who made it and model?
Is it AGP, PCI, or embedded on motherboard? What version of XF86 are you using?
Have you already tried to configure XF86?
There will be more questions but these should be fine for starters.
Well guys how do i configure my XF86 etc? Like i said i'm VERY new on the whole linux scene...i actually just got it installed....Thanks

It's fairly easy, log in as root, (root as user & password you chose on install). Then type Xconfigurator. This will bring you to a screen where you get to choose the options for your video card & monitor. Chose something that is appropriate for your card...start off trying 8 bit at 800x600 or something like that. That's the only config tool that I've used for my card and although it looks like crap it works. :D
Hope that helps.

I use xf86config - one note you must do this at a console, no X windows can be running (which obviously is not happening anyway)
