Canonical processing

Hi

I am trying to find out how the canonical terminal handling is implemented in Linux? Is is implemented as kernel loadable module that is either compiled in the kernel or pushed at startup.
I am in process for writing terimal device driver would probably need to get an entry point into kernel for the canonical processing. I am not sure if i would have ti implement the whole thing all over again.

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
