I decided to get an external serial modem so that I could lose my dependancy on my winmodem. I found one by Best Data on the shelf at CompUSA that advertised itself as Linux compatible on the box! That and the Belkin Gold Series serial cable came to about $100.

As it turns out the modem came with kppp setup instructions, and phone support (at $7 an incident).

Well, the end of it is that the modem works, but I still can't get in through MSN. The connection is made, but the login script always seems to hang at 'Starting pppd...' The PPP log says that the connection terminated on signal 15.

I'm using a dialup through my office network as a substitute until I get this figured out.

Any suggestions?

Start kppp and go to setup. Now click on Terminal button. You should see
ATH
OK
ATZ
OK
within a second or two. now type
atm1l3<enter>,
you should get
OK
NOTE this sets your speaker so you can hear. Type
atdt5551212<enter>
NOTE: replace 5551212 with your ISP phone number. You
should hear the two modems squawk for a few seconds then get
CONNECT
Now wait a second or two and you will possibly see the computer name you
are connecting to and then get
Login:
You can enter your login and you will get
Password:
Enter your password then you will get an IP address and a message that a
PPP session has been established. If you get this far then your modem is
fine and you need to look at your Kppp settings.

I don't know if you know this or not, but MSN doesn't have their servers all to themselves, so they put a tag on your username to show that you're an MSN member. If you dial-up with their MSN apps, you'll never see it. Try adding "MSN/" to the front of your username:

- MSN username: foo
- Real username: MSN/foo

There shouldn't be anything to do to the password, just add the MSN thing to your username and try that. If that doesn't work, I don't know what's wrong.

I didn't know that... Thanks, I try it when I get home from work.

Actually a signal 15 means the link was terminated because the peer is
not responding to echo requests. I think if it was a bad username then
you would get PAP authentication failure or maybe a signal 19. But then
again...

UPDATE

Using frozen's tip, I was able to get connected with MSN, and I started Konqueror. However...

When I type in a URL, the wheel spins, and then, the wheel spins, then I look down to make sure I'm still connected, and the two lights are generally red, with an occaisional flash of green and the wheel is still spinning, and then the wheel is still spinning, and this goes on and on...

No error messages, no 'server not found', just the spinning wheel. Anyone know what's up?

Hmm, that's strange. Try testing the connection on another browser. Maybe you could try lynx. Maybe it's just a config problem with Konqueror. I've never had that problem before though, so I'm not sure.
