Hi. Question. I came home one day to a dead system. After much ado, I have replaced the power supply and verified almost all of the components. Here's what I know;

Originally, HDA was bad. As long as it had a power connector, the ATX power supply would not start up (fan didn't spin). With this drive unplugged, power comes up.

All 12v components (drives, CDRom, fans) come up with power-on.

Memory has been tested in another system and works fine (in fact just swapped with the other system since specs were identical for memory).

CPU heats up when power applied.

On-board fan connector for CPU fan never causes the fan to spin, but plugging it in to the auxilary fan power connector, the fan runs fine (does FAN1 not working mean anything?).

I get absolutely no POST beeps, even though I have verified that the case speaker is plugged in.

Trying two different (known working) PCI and one ISA vidoe card, I get absolutely nothing to either of two working monitors (one is "energy aware, one is just plain old VGA).

I am concluding that my Mother Board is bad.

Does anyone have a different suggesting?

What mother boards would be recommended (with cost being my main issue - I need inexpensive!)

Thanks -
Chris.

It is either MB or Proc.

Can you check the Proc in another MB? If you do upgrade your MOBO, I would suggest going out and getting a Duron and compatible MOBO. Such a combo should set you back less than $150. Abit k7 is really nice but others should be fine.

might be something as simple as a "fuse" - say, a small diode, depends on load - or maybe one of the power regulators. if it was mine, i'd putz with it, use my VOM to test circuits, voltages, whatever i could test for myself before trashing the board. i'd probably do it even if i *wanted* to trash the board! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif (i'm nibby.)
