Ext2 filesystems work differently than the Microsoft file systems and doesn't really need defragmenting, even though I think I have seen some.

I think there may be some tweaks in hdparm that can reduce gaps between files at the expense of disk speed.

If you want to defrag, the easiest way would be to pipe the files using tar to another partition, deleting the files on the first directory and piping them back through tar to the original directory. I have never seen even 2% fragmentation reported in my logs and I am a serious messer-arounder with Linux and am installing and uninstalling lots and use my machine to study music. Lots of files created, edited, moved, deleted, etc.

Ya got a real OS to play with now.

Enjoy the ride!

CoCo 3. Now THAT'S a computer.
OS9. Great operating system.
Rainbow magazine was a great magazine for the color computers and OS9 support.
