I'm using RH7.1(don't have gnome installed, just kde). When the system boots up I can start kde though the graphical login with no problems. However, if I go to logout and shoutdown to colsole, I can't restart kde by typing startx.

When i type startx I just get a grey screen with the x cuosor-- no kde. In order to get back to kde i have to either reboot or type xinit and then startkde in the xterm window. This is very annoying not to mention time consuming :(

I have another problem that's probably connected to this. Sometimes when I go to quit to console i get stuck with that grey screen. I have to kill x with ctrl-alt-etc to get to the console.

When i first installed i didn't have this problem. How the heck can i fix this?

seems like X is starting without a window/desktop manager... have you tried putting the line "exec startkde" en your .xinitrc file in your home dir ?
