Problems With Xfree86 in Debian

Ok all, I must be stupid. I have been messing with this for 2 days now and I havent made much progress at all. I am running a athlon 950 with 512mb ram and a nvidia geforce2 mx400

I installed debian 2.2-2-rev 3 to be a dual boot with my current rh7.1

After install - I had no luck getting XF86Config to see my video card and there had no X at all.

So - I upgraded my kernel to the new 2.4.7 and also used the convenient NHF found here to install Xfree86 4(newest one) It supposedly has support for the geforce2mx400.

well - if your still with me then i am hoping you can help - here is the log file with all the lovely errors i am getting. I am fresh out of answers here.

Also, just to give you more info. When i try XFree86 -configure(it dies instantly telling me to submit a bug report)

when I run XF86Configure - If i select nvidia geforce(the only nvidia geforce product listed) and put it my exact vertical and horizontal frequencies......it will work when typing startx if i use 8bit crap and the wimpiest xserver possible - If i try anything else - it causes my screen to get filled with colors and lines and I am unable to get out of it - CTRL-ALT BCKSPCE, +, -, F1-F8 all do nothing

sometimes if it happens and I hit ctrl-alt-f1, and type in root and then the password(not seeing if its actually doing anything ofcourse) i can use the reboot command to reboot but the same thing happens every time - i notice that when the screen goes crappy like that - and i gain root access (again not actually seeing a screen) i just do a rm /etc/X11/XF86Config and then i type reboot and it lets me at least get console. If you need any more info let me know

Have you tried running xf86config? You might have more luck with that. Otherwise try to reinstall.

yeah - im using that, but the problem is that the default xserver that comes with debian doesnt support my geforce2 card. I reinstalled 5 times already. Am i able to select which xfree86 version gets installed at boot - I can do the install via internet as i am on a cable modem and the debian install allows this
