Just a quick discovery that I was unable to read anywhere that i thought I would share with you all....

the ntfs module(even the one with the newest kernel 2.4.7)...doesn't work at all with win2k partitions, (Not the experimental writeable part) - just the ntfs read module.

It is my assumption that it only works with win nt 4 or lower.

If anyone knows different please let me know.

That sounds right. I think they played with NTFS a little with the release of Win2K. I'm sure someone has written or is in the process of writing a Win2K compliant NTFS module. (Have a quick search of the 'net and find out if you're bothered.)

hehe, i searched long and hard....stumbled into many trouble posts just reading a nt 4 partition. I didnt however see any mention of it not working for win 2k partitions.

NT4 uses NTFS4

W2K uses NTFS5

I doubt that even read access will work for NTFS5 though it could in the future.

I just find it odd that there is a nhf on ntfs..well..filesharing anyway, and it doesn't mention that, nor are there any other threads that mention it that are actually readable. Hey mdwatts the 3rd, Is there any chance of you posting some links that I can go to to read about this topic myself, because I was unable to find anything about it.

Thanks

Sawz... I really don't remember where I read that. I do so much reading on Linux (forget most of it though) that it's hard to keep track of where I picked up certain info. Could have been on Google or one of the online Linux mags q's and a's. linuxgazette ??

Heh, you can alwayz partition your drive using a Win98 boot disk and then format it to NTFS in Win2K to get it to be NTFS4 partition. That's what I do. =)

heh!, We were noting that Win2k will make it a ntfs5 filesystem, not ntfs4. but the whole issue is that alot of people can't just format their drives to make it compatible, we need the data to remain undamaged. lol though - I live on Google, hehehe. Its one of my favorite search engines. BTW - who voted for me(1 star) and why only 1 star. I try to be helpful and answer questions for people. I guess someone didn't like my responce to a post or something.

On a side note. I didn't notice any option in Win2k to format it to ntfs 4 or 5. Am I wrong on this or does my memory serve me correcty.?

Wouldn't formatting through W2K make it NTFS5? You would have to format with NT4 and then attempt to install W2K without allowing it to reformat during the install.

Sawz... That rings a bell having W2K give you the option of NTFS4 or 5.

I do remember there being an option when installing Windows2k between NTFS4 or NTFS5 but i dont think you can get at it without reinstalling Windows. Where can I get this new kernel and once I do get it, how do I get Linux running on it?? I'm new to Linux, but I would really like to be able to just read off my NTFS partition, cuz it has all my MP3s on it.
