Does anyone use Kpackage with Debian? If so, what are your thoughts about it?

THanks John teeitup 12-14-2000, 12:55 PM I assume your talking about make-kpkg for kernel building. I have tried it about half a dozen times. When it works it is sweet. I had one machine that it looked like it was working, even created the .deb file. Installed the deb package, but no kernel install, just modules. The other machines seemed to go fine. I've been disappointed with the documentation available for it. Try it, can't hurt. Maybe use the new 2.2.18 kernel so you don't have to mess with your 2.2.17 module directory. That way you can always go back to your working config. Be aware it will alter your lilo.conf file if you use one. The new kernel will boot from "linux" and your original kernel will have a new name. I would be interested in your experience. Not alot of talk about it here. No, I haven't used it. Don't really need it so I haven't tried it. A while back when I gave redhat6.2 a test drive I tried it and found it relatively uninspiring. The reason debian is nice is because you don't need that sort of thing. Storm Linux has their own SPM (Storm Package Manager) which is now included on the Debian "Woody" tree for download but I don't use that either. Really, apt-get does most of my work (I like it better) and dpkg comes in handy in most other cases. So, I don't know much about Kpackage other than I really didn't find a reason to use it over the other handy utilities. ------------------ Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again. _- Franklin P. I'm certainly no expert, so I feel more comfortable with a gui front end. I've used Apt-get for a few things and it really seems to work great. Really the only thing I'm using SPM for is search for packages so I can learn their names! Thanks John Play with the CLI a bit... you will truly appreciate it a lot more than SPM or Kpackage. You can use apt to search packages, too. Read all the docs on apt. It's amazingly versatile. I came from windows-only-stuff and find now, with linux, I am using the command line more and more and more... especially with apt. Storm is an excellent commercial distro of Debian, by the way, but pure Debian is, of course, pure. Either way you have debian. ------------------ Experience is that marvelous thing that enables you to recognize a mistake when you make it again. _- Franklin P. Thanks John veloctTX 12-14-2000, 05:49 PM www.oreilley.com (http://www.oreilley.com) has one of the debian books online and you can print out the apt, dpkg and dselect section. justlinux.com
