What NIC do you have?

From what I understand, all RedHat distributions say that during the interactive startup. When I used to run Mandrake, it would say the same thing, even though my network card would work. I know this post probably doesn't solve your problem, but maybe you will know now where not to look.

it recongnizes my card..i look at at the hardware configuration and it says DECchip 21041 (Tulip Pass 3)..which is my NIC. The error it gives me on startup is Bringing Up eth0 interface: error destermining IP through DHCP: failes. What should I do? I set up all the network setting like IP,DNS,Gateways, host names, and everything else...

i know exactly the problem you're having... my solution has always been to rerun:
/etc/rc.d/initd/network start
the rh startup scripts are not friends with dhcp...

Do you have it set up for a dynamic IP, if so that is why it fails....Set it up for a static IP and retry....

Hmmm. If your card is Digital corps. 10/100 NIC then it propably won't work. I have one, and Kudzu program that comes with RedHat based distros makes it use "tulip" driver module. It works fine with MS products but Linux distros just say "eth0 initialization failed...". So i recommend to change NIC, 3COM cards and "RealTek" models work without a problem with all recent Linux versions.
But i may be wrong, you can ofcourse try some other driver module.

If you asked from me, i would recommend you all 3COM models like 3C905 and "RealTek" based cards like Trust (if you've ever heard even of this?) These are two working options. Ofcourse if you want to get working model cheap, go something like older 3COM ISA models, they are good option too? I guess it doesn't matter in home use is the NIC 10 or 100, but if you get good deal on 100mb card, by all means by it!

Realteks work great....I got a pair of them on the LAN at my house. You can pick them up for about $15 IIRC. Look around and check some compatibility lists and see. Hope this helps a little.

Its a jeep thing... You wouldn't understand.
A common one is the D-Link DFE530tx+
make sure you get the plus though as there is also a DFE530tx and it uses a tulip module I think. The plus use the rtl8139.o or 8139too.o depending on kernel version.

OK thanks...do you think this will solve my problem if I buy a new NIC..do I even need to really buy a new one? thanks...
