Trying for my 1st Kernel rebuild, and I get stuck at the 1st hurdle.
As Root, I cd to /usr/src/linux, then type "make config". I get the message back "make:***No rule to make target "config". Stop.". Get the same with "menuconfig" and "xconfig". Can Linux *smell* newbies?
Red Hat 6.2, 64MB RAM, Pentium 200MMX.
I just want play.

Sounds like something fundamentally wrong with your Makefile (if it's there at all, check in /usr/src/linux)- how did you get hold of the source and how did you unpack it?

You need to install the Kernel source, headers, doc and ncurses to compile a kernel, if these are not installed you will come up with that error message.....
Good luck......

I'm just tidying up the install I got with a Publishers version of Red Hat 6.2, cleaning out the crap that doesn't need to be there. Just trying to learn, really.
Had a look in /usr/src/linux. Is there supposed to be much in there? I found "configs" and "include".
Looks like I might have to do a bit more reading. Bugger.

Anyone point me towards relevent online reading on this matter? I'll probably have a look myself, but any help appreciated.

There is a NHF on the subject which I believe others have used successfully.
It looks as though your documentation assumes you already have the source code installed - you will need to download this or install it from your distro media. Five40i mentioned ncurses - this is necessary if you wish to use menuconfig, I imagine most distros would include ncurses as part of the default install anyway.

Got it sorted. Being the lazy arse that I am, I went for the W/S install, so most of the stuff I needed was not installed.
Fixed now. Had to do a reinstall anyway, removed NT4 to give the Penguin some room to swim. Compiled it this afternoon.
Now, where is that NHF on Thin Clients.....
