I can easily install rpms from my cd, using kpackage or rpm at the command line. But when I try to install some rpms I downloaded from the net, I get an error as follows:

only packages with major numbers <=3 are supported by this version of rpm.

My distribution is Best Linux 2000. The version or RPM is 3.0.3, which was installed by the installer.

Do I have to download a new version of RPM, or what do I have to do to run these other rpms?

Thank you,

Dusty

Yes, you have to upgrade your rpm to rpm 4. The problem is that the rpm package for the new rpm is also the newer format, and you cannot install it with your old rpm!

You can, however, install rpm packages, that have 6x in their file name, with your older rpm.

Go to rpmfind.net and search for a rpm package. Here's what I found for you, you might want to try installing this (http://rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/rpm.org//rpm/dist/rpm-4.0.x//rpm-4.0.2-6x.i386.html).
