AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH! Sorry, but I'm going INSANE! I've been working on this for a few hours, and its 1:36, and I have to go in really early for work tomorow, and....

::breathe::

Ok........

I have mandrake 8.0 installed on my intel PIII box, and I use KDE as my desktop/WM. Its nice and happy. But theres one hitch- the only browser I've ever been able to use java in is netscape communicator 4.something or other, which mandrake installed by default. The problem? Netscape 4.x sucks. Hard.

I've tried installing netscape 6. Yes, I did full install, which claimed it'd install java. If I go in the netscape 6 plugin dir, the java.so is staring at me. But if I ever try going to a page with java... "This page contains information of a type (application/x-java-vm) that can only be viewed with the appropriate Plug-in. Click OK to download plugin".

Yes, I've hit 'ok' and downloaded the plugin 5 times. restarted Netscape. Restarted x server. Restarted the whole box. And it still gives me the same message.

I've gone to java.sun.com, and installed the newest java2 standard addition with plugin. It did diddly squat.

I've installed Kaffe. Nothing.

What I REALLY want in life, is to be able to use Java in Konqueror. If I can't do that, then I guess I could survive popping up netscape6 if I need java. But apparently, with my luck, asking to be able to actually use java on my linux partition is asking too much. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Please, for the love of god, somebody help me before I :gulp: uninstall linux and switch back to windoze because I'm sick of noncompliant webpages that demand I use a java or flashplugin that doesn't exist for me. :(

>>Thanks in advance!

If you installed Java to it's default location (/usr/java/jre1.3.1) it's easy to get working. In Konq go to Settings > Configure Konqueror > Konqueror Browser > Java

Enable Java globally and enter
/usr/java/jre1.3.1
into "Path to Java executable"

Restart Konq and you should be set.

Also, and no guarentees on this, but you can download the latest nightly build from mozilla (netscape's better cousin). If you aren't in the mood to fully install it, you can simply download a .tar.gz version into your home directory (or subdirectory like mozilla), and try it out. At least that's what works best for me. The downside is that the build are supposedly only good for a month, at which point you'll have to do it again. The upside is that you'll be miles ahead of both konqueror and especially netscape.

As a precaution, I tend to download a version, test it, download another, and make sure it works before I commit to it and blow away the first copy. Yes, that means I have twice the data on my HD, but it's worth it to me.

And although I like konqueror, I honestly think that mozilla has finally reached the point where it is more valuable than any other browser, including IE, unless you need VB disfunctionality. :)

Also I've found that it's a good idea to be root when you got that question.

Only root can write to the Nescape/Mozilla/Opera plug-in directory.

So even if the plugin-installer claims to do everything prefect, it's lying to you.

Oncd you've done it as root, all users can us java.

Thanks for helping a newbie out guys :)

It seems to be working now, though it takes a minute to load any applet  heh heh

What about getting it going on Mozilla/Netscape/Galleon?

Oh, and does anybody know why fonts look so ridiculously aliased and impossible to read in Mozilla/netscape unless you have it on a completely sans seriffed one like adobe-helvetica?

One last thing (heh)- is it possible to install Flash on Konquer....? I remember seing an NHF about it way back, and trying it out to no avail. Can't find it now though.

To get flash working install netscape-plugins-4.77-4mdk.i386.rpm which is on the 1st CD. Then when you go to "configure konqueror" in konqueror there will be a new option for netscape plugins there. I think that's all I did to get flash working, not sure why this isn't installed by default.

OOk, I installed netscape-plugins-4.77-4mdk.i386.rpm, and restarted X. Don't see it anywhere in the Config Konquer dialog... err... where will it be?

In konqueror, Settings->Configure Konqueror-> and then on the left side where it had the menu icons the bottom one should be "netscape plugins". But you shouldn't actually have to do anything after installing them, they should just automatically work...

ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

>>sorry, heh.

I installed the 'nestcape-plugins-4.77-4mdk.i386' rpm package, and the installation claimed to be successful. But I'm not seeing that icon in the Konqueror configuration menu.

And I've tried downloading and installing Flash for linux 5 times. It works on Netscape 4.x, but not on Mozilla, or Netscape 6 (or Konqueror for that matter, but you already knew that, heh)

There's a good NHF about fonts (why they look so ugly and how to semi-fix the problem) on linuxnewbie.org =)
