I'm having a bit of a problem... when i usualy update my kernel i start by saying modules to everything and leave the rest to the defaulted answers... this has worked for me an allowed myself to go back later and turn off what i don't need.
So I made the jump to 2.4 and all seemed to go smoothly until around modules_install.

I was given two errors... one about isdn and another about pcmica.

I ran a make xconfig and turned of all things isdn and went about the compilation process again.

around modules_install my only error was about pcmica. so i ran make xconfig... turned off all pcmica stuff in the character device section and I turned off all pcmica stuff in the gernerl setup section... why only these two sections? well these were the only two places that i could find options for pcmica stuff.

I then recompiled the kernel and I still got the same thing.... 1 error about pcmica. I'm stuck and don't know what i have to do to avoid this error... i think it might have something to do with PCIC... but i'm not to sure what that is...

thank you for your help.

Read this carefully, especially about pcmcia and isdn:
http://www.linuxhq.com/kernel/v2.4/changes.html

You need to update a few things first.

did you make sure you compile in hot-swap support?

Thanks for that link - explains everything that's wrong.

I need newer versions of:
modutils
e2fsprogs
pcmcia-cs
ppp
isdn4k-utils

QUESTION: I have no personal need for the last 3 items (desktop on a LAN). Can I manually disable support somewhere in my kernel config?

damn - the PCMCIA-CS stuff is partially implemented inside the kernel and the mirror for pcmcia-cs 3.1.21
