I am back! Ok... Installed Red Hat 7.0 and it worked out pretty good. Two questions... The one more simple than the other, and I have tried to find them around here... With no luck though...
Here goes:
1) When I choose Red Hat in the loader, I enter a promt of some kind. Scary! I want my KDE og Gnome. Either one. Give me some windows! Please!
I am to reinstall the whole thing or can I somehow make it?
2) My network card was not detected. Does RH 7.0 support automatic hardware detection? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif I have a DFE-530TX.
With regards from Denmark! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif
1) You need to change your init level from 3 to 5. /etc/inittab I think.
2) 530tx or 530tx+?
The former needs the via-rhine driver 1.07, the later uses the rtl8139 driver. Do a search in the forums for via-rhine the website where you can get it was just posted recently.

Tried to enter /etc/inittab and got the rude message, that acces to that area was denied. And yes, I had signed in as root. Strange... Eh? Is this a result of something, I did not choose during the installation, cause if it is, then another installation should handle it... right?
The netword card is without a plus... http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
With regards!
Hope one of you fellows, have the solution near! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif

You're in Red Hat right? Try linuxconf I seem to remember that you can change the default run level there. Changing your default run level will mean that you won't get a prompt when you boot, you'll get a graphical login. If you just want to get into X(kde or gnome) from the command line type startx

Hurrayy! The startx command worked wonders! Thanks fellows... Now I have one problem left however. My network card is nowhere to be found, and since I have never installed hardware on linux before, I am on the new and shaky ground. Would anybody mind explaining me, how to install it easy and smoothly? http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
With thankfull regards!

I recently got my DFE-530TX working in Linux. Read all about it here (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/Forum12/HTML/000371.html).
Before you attempt to compile the new drivers, try typing this in as root:
modprobe via-rhine
If you don't get an error your card is supported out of the box. Use whatever program RH ships with their distro to set up your network card (in Slackware it's netconfig). You might also want to make sure that `modprobe via-rhine` is executed every time Linux is booted (can't remember how to do it with RH though). You'll have to ask someone else how to do that http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif
If you _do_ get an error when using modprobe via-rhine, go to the link posted above and follow the instructions...

Thanks everybody!
It finally worked out, so thanks for all the advice. And yes... For the record, restarting the machine does help! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif The command that helped me out was netconfig. Plain and simple. Then restart. Lovely! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif
With nice regards!

Just to help you get out of the 'Windows' mentality, you will discover that it is not necessary to reboot your box after you have made a configuration change. You simply have to restart the 'service' involved via the command line. In your case an /etc/rc.d/init.d/network restart done as root would have accomplished the same task. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
