I have a USR modem under Mandrake 7.2. So far, I have not made it work! I have typed in all the correct information for connecting to my ISP, but when I dial out or query the modem, I get the message that the modem is not responding!
The modem in WIn2K Pro--I have a dual boot system--is listed as Com3, and I have chosen the appropriate port for the modem in Linux as well. I wonder if it is because Linux has not correctly recognized the modem--Mandrake(7.2)sees the modem as a USR Sportser 56K rather than USR 56K Internal PnP Faxmodem(It is an ISA controller based modem; it is not a winmodem, in other words.). I looked around--in the manufacturer's site as well as some well known modem support sites--for the Linux driver for this modem, but did not find any! If it is the driver problem, could someone please tell me where to get the driver and how to install it!(With detailed step by step info, of course.) I would really like to get this thing to work, but don't have time to look around!
While I am at this, I also have not made my soundcard work--it is SB Live Value! I cannot play audio CD in KDE or Gnome, nor do I hear any sound when the machine boots up! Does Mandake 7.2 play music when it boots up?

I had the same problem about a year ago when I was playing with RH 5.2. My USR modem had jumpers set for PnPray. I had to set the jumpers for the IRQ, and Comm port that I wanted. Once I did that, no further problems. I have left my modem set to Comm 2 since then, and had no problems running Linux Red Hat, and now Mandrake 7.1
Windows sees it on comm 2 when ever I format the hard drive also.

did you use setserial to tell linux what irq to use? that modem is very possibly not using the default irq for com3. if that works - and btw, use setserial as root - then you can add the command to one of your startup files.
i'm pretty sure there's a NHF that covers pnp hardware, and it's probably a lot more useful than anything i can suggest.

I got so frustrated with this modem that I have moved it to my backup machine! I am now using a LT Winmodem!
Thanks for the suggestion. Will try when I install Linux on my backup machine!
