1. Installed Slack 7.1 w/o X

2. Downloaded and install X 4.0.1 - followed instructions (Xinstall.sh seems to do most of the word for you)

3. Ran xf86config - tried setting it up to my video card, had same problem I'm about to mention. Decided to just go with Standard VGA for now to see if I can even get it working. When I run startx I get:

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration.

Fatal server error:
no screens found

ARGH!!!!! HELP ME!!!

What video Card do you have ?

FYI, installing XFree86 4.0.1 the way you did it is a good way to learn (thats the way i do it on non-slack machines) but for slackware you can just download the XFree86-4.0.1-i386-1.tgz and install it like so

installpkg XFree86-4.0.1-i386-1.tgz

also im just telling you this so you know, the install files work just as good, just thought you may like to know http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

NeoMagic MagivMedia 256AV

However, I also tried choosing Standard VGA adapter in xf86config - same problem.

This is an IBM Thinkpad Laptop.
