multi-homed question

OK I ahve my box setup like this.
eth0 216.bla.bla.bla thats the line out to the net. and also the default route for the box.
eth1 10.0.0.1 lan side....
If im on a box on the lan side why cant i telnet to 10.0.0.1 ( not trying to get out of the lan yet)

Could be anything. Do you have the right RJ45 cables? Were the network cards detected? Is inetd running? Do you have a firewall blocking ICMP (ping) or telnet?
