I finally got my Mandrake 7.2 system working with a lot of tweaking. I was starting to get into the LFS book, and I had just created a /dev/hda9 partition to put the lfs system on. I rebooted ('cause I used a Drak utility and I had to) and when it was listing all the services that were starting, it failed to load postgresql. When I tried to go into X, it failed saying that it couldn't find the default fixed font. PLEASE HELP! I don't want to have to go through the trouble of reinstalling...

Yeah, I tried that. Weird things happen. It looks like the rpm is installing, but after a while I get a message that says "VM: Killing" and then "Killed". In the syslog it says Kernel: VM Killing process rpm. Please Help. I think I might just reinstall Mandrake and be done with it because it is making me lose sleep...

Did you try uninstalling before reinstalling. I forget what the command line is for that. This should wipe away all files for that package and then you can reinstall them.

I used the --force option. That should install over the original files. What I don't understand is that the process got killed before it was able to install. It said VM:Killing process and then Killed and the packages weren't installed. Also, I found on shutdown when it tries to stop the X Font Server, it fails. Another strange thing happens. I have it set so that when it loads up, X starts automagically. This of course fails now, and it leaves me back at a normal login prompt. In about 1 minute, text appears on the screen saying Init Runlevel 3 and it tries to load postrgresql again. I can hit enter and then it goes back to the login prompt.

Fonts seem to be a big pain in the @ss with the new XFree86, but try to remove the options first with rpm -avh. Then attempt to reinstall the fonts. I know the feeling of failure when you have to reinstall!

I reinstalled Mandrake 7.2, I got tired of trying to fix it. I created a number of partitions when I installed it. I loaded up for the first time, it went into Aurora (Mandrake's new graphical boot prog). It loads all the partitions fine, except for the last one, /dev/hda9. It stops loading, and puts me into a sh shell. I ran fsck on /dev/hda9, and it said either it had a bad superblock or the partition tabel was corrupted. It said to use an alternate superblock, but I have no idea what number that would be. hda9 is not a partition I particularly need, so I decided to use fdisk to delete it. I'm still in this special sh shell. When I tell fdisk to print the partition table, all it lists is /dev/hda9. When I hit delete partition, it lists 1-4. I f I type in any number, it won't work (doesn't exist). Please help.
