Hi all. When I issue the startx command as any user other than root I get X to come up, but Gnome does not start, I just get a grey screen with a movable icon. If I look at the virtual console I see this error: "Gnome-Error **: file gnome-exec.c: line 163 (gnome_execute_async_with_env_fds): assertion failed: (stdinfd >=0) aborting..."

Root works fine. I can't find the .c file, I thought maybe some permissions problem? I tried to login with xdm, no go, it comes up but again, gnome won't launch. I searched for this error and am coming up short.

Plz. help if possible...

Kindly,

JC

Try removing all directories starting with .gnome that are in your home directory. You may also need to add exec gnome-session to your .Xdefaults file.

Ok. I dumped all of that and still nada.

I can't seem to find a .Xdefaults file anywhere. I downloaded and installed the newest version of gnome-helix and same problem persists. I looks like X is fine, but gnome isnt starting for any user but root. Could it have anything to do with any autorization file for displays or something? It weird that root can run gnome...

Thanks!

When I startx as any user I get a gnome screen that says loading proxy something, I click the mouse and the image disappears. It seems gnome is trying to load.

I ran switchdesktop (I am on RH 6.2) and copied the .Xclient and .Xclient-default files to my /home/testuser dir. I switched to the KDE desktop for root, copying these two files over to my testuser's home directory worked, KDE launched!! So does anyone know what could be f'd up with gnome to be causing these problems?

Ok. After reinstalling Gnome, switching out the .Xclient-defaults file, things seem to be working....BUT http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/confused.gif

Now when I try and create an xterm in gnome I get this error: "There has been an error while trying to log on. If you are using Linux 2.2.x with glibc 2.1.x this is probably due to incorrectly setup Unix98 ptys. Pease read linux/Docu/Changes for how to set them up correctly"

Anyone have any idea how I can set this up properly? Another user asked this ? in March but no one responded.

Thanks,

JC

If you don't have one, all you have to do is create the file /home/user/.Xdefaults
