Im running Windows 2000 Pro and Vmware. I install linux as the guest and i can never seem to load X? I gett different errors each time i install. My question is that, is my hardware compatible in the slightest?

I think its the video card not either being supported or not configured. Is there any thing i can do to install Linux 6.2 using my hardware?
6.2 is all i have on CD right now and just trying to learn unix. I dont really need the X, basically i just want the CLI for learning the interface commands.
 null6.2 is all i have

Your hardware is OK. With your graphic card I'm not really sure, but it should be supported by Xfree 4.x.x.
goto Xfree86.Org (http://www.xfree86.org) to check that.
56 MB Ram? Don't you mean 256MB???
Linux 6.2 Hehe...which Distro do you have? RedCrap??? SuSE??? Mandrake???

opps, yeah, i meant a 256 stick, the flavor is Red. Will i have to download anything else. Or should i just go to the site to check my vid card against the HCL? :p

Ok, your card is supported by Xfree 4.x.x.
But I don't know if RedHat (I think you have it) 6.2 comes with Xfree86 4.x.x. So you'll have to install the new verison after installing RedCrap. I think Mandrake 8.0 should autodetect your card, but I'm (again) not really sure.
If you want to give mandrake a try, you can get the images from www.linuxiso.org (http://www.linuxiso.org).
Good luck :D

FYI - MDK 8.0 will recognize your Radeon. At least it did with my Radeon 64DDR. MDK 7.2 didn't.

MDK is short for Mandrake right? Sorry this is a world of acronyms you know...I bought the Sams teach yourself UNIX in 24 hours book, its so new its not even released yet. Im just going to need something to use with the book...I know that most unix CLI are basically the same right?

Sorry ... yes it's Mandrake. As for your CLI question, no clue. This is only my third day using Linux. I'm still trying to figure out how to get access to my floppy drive!!!

>>Hehe...you know about mounting???<<
Not much. I've read some things, tried them but I get "permission denied" even when logged in as root.
Got a tip?

For Radeon chips, you need XFree86 4.0.2 or higher. Everything else is fine. For the mounting issue, make sure you have a floppy in the drive.

the easy way is to just install a brandy new version like mandrake 8 or red hat 7.1 or even peanut 8.4 ;)
that is what i would do cause i am still a linuxnewbie :(
but you can install rh 6.2 then upgrade the x thingy to that new version, you will learn much doing it that way jr. grasshopper :D
