x display problem

i'm running redhat 6.1 with KDE. i have tried both KDE and GNOME and the problem is the same. all the text and pictures are black, the cursor sometimes goes to a square.
i think it is caused from me installing the monitor incorectly or somehting like that. could anyone help me with this by telling me where this problem may have come from.

It would be nice if you give more details, graphic card, monitor, xconfiguration, etc.

I used to have that. Then I got a new graphics card, that I knew worked with Linux. That was back when I was just starting out and I didn't want to bang my head against the wall just to get X to work, so I took the easy way out. :)
