my hostname/domain is still locahost.localdomain...
i do not wish to have this!!!
everytime i set it to what i want, it goes back to that...
i'm using mandrake 8.0 for this, and slackware did it fine...
it just keeps going back when i use linuxconf to set it...
where is the file that contains the host/domain names?
should be in /etc i think....
and what the hell is going on on LNO?!?!

Slackware set the $HOSTNAME via rc.M, I believe- if you rebooted, rc.M would set it back to what it was before you changed.
the file is usually /etc/HOSTNAME or /etc/hostname. You might try looking it /etc/sysconfig just to be sure it's not there. BUT, I don't use MDK, so I'm not sure about any of this...

In Solaris I edit the /etc/hostname file but that does not work for me in linux. I always use netconf and reboot. I did it once on Mandrake 7.0.

if Mandy is like RH, it is in /etc/sysconfig/network. The other places where your name goes are taken from this one. Ray

if worst comes to worst you can always add "hostname goofyname" to rc.local

who would've thought that typing
hostname [hostname] would do it?
