I turned on my computer today, and it took a REAL long time to start grub. I thought nothing of it. I then selected "Windows" to boot windows... i come back 15 minutes later, and it still hasn't booted. (this is odd, since my computer is an amd 700) but it loaded windows drivers and everytyhing...
I then tried to boot linux. It booted. EVENTUALLY. It took about 30 minutes to load the kernel. And it ran so slow, that to show my / directory took over 3 minutes.

I have no idea what would cause this. I have not changed any settings in my computer, it's connected to a surge protector, and i treat my computer better than i treat my family...

what could have happened to my computer??

Imminant hard disk failure, IMO. If it's a S.M.A.R.T drive run the diagonistics that came with the drive. I had the same problem, I rushed out to buy a new drive and the last thing the old drive did was to backup to the new drive before croaking it. You have backups, right?

1st, how do i find out if it's a SMART drive? i believe it's a 15.0 GB Quantum Fireball.

2nd, is there nothing i can do? fdisk the thing and start from scratch? or does this mean a ruined hard drive? If the latter, then i'm totally fscked over...

what would cause this? i got this hard drive, I believe, about 6 months ago...

I've had brand new harddrives fail on me. This does sound like a HD problem. backup everything you can before it blows. maybe you can get it repaired under warranty? use it as a second drive when you get it back http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif

i think i'll be getting a scsi hard drive... i'm looking at one, but i have to raise $149 first... and then i'm trading a voodoo 3 2000 for a scsi adapter
