I've been trying to setup X on a linux machine in the office for a week now and I've decided it's time to beg for help from LNO users...

When I use the vga16 driver, X works fine (res: 640x480). When I set X to use the svga driver (which is the one recommended by xf86config), my mouse pointer becomes a stamp-sized white square and X starts up so slowly (at least 5 minutes) that I'm forced to press reset. This happens whatever default resolution I use. I tried using the S3 driver but I get errors and X shuts down.

The program that I have to install on the machine needs at least an 800x600x256 display.

Here are the pc's specs:
cpu: AMD K6-2/500 with 128Mb ram
monitor: DTS 770JK
video card: S3 Trio3D/2x (86c362), 8Mb ram
distro: Red Hat Linux 6.1

I've already downloaded the binaries for XFree86 v4 but I don't want to install the new version yet. I'm hoping that I can get v3 to work.

Thanks in advance.

hello,
What kind of errors do you get when you use the S3 server? That is the on you want to use. Does the S3 server work while it up and running?

Hi Paul,

I get errors about the hSync and vRefresh rate when I use the S3 server. But the required numbers are beyond the range given in my monitor's manual. Every howto that I've read warned of *dire* consequences if I give hSync and vRefresh rates that are higher than what my monitor can handle.

I'm gonna try adding my own modelines to the config file today. If I can only get the right dot clock values...
