okay, here's my problem...
i have an AMD duron 700 system that refuses to boot up any distro. of linux i try to install onto it. The installation and setup processes go perfectly fine, but when it comes time to boot into linux, i get a "kernel panic: unable to mount VFS on root partition", or something to that effect. my hard drive is an IBM 34GB 7200rpm deskstar and i never had problems installing linux onto it before on my old system. my motherboard is an abit kt7-raid, but im not using the raid capabilities on it, so im sorta wondering if the on-board raid controller could have anything to do with it?
also, my system is VERY finicky about which IDE channels my cd-rom and hard drive are on. for instance, to install linux, i MUST put my cd-rom onto the first IDE channel, or else i cannot boot off my cd-rom, no matter what my BIOS settings, and therefore i cannot install. and then, after the installation is complete, i have to move my cd-rom to the 2nd IDE channel, and my hard drive to the 1st, or else my system will keep trying to boot from the cd-rom. no matter what my boot settings are in the BIOS, the system will try to boot from the cd-rom so long as it's on the 1st IDE channel. so im wondering if this could be part of the problem as well, because linux cannot see that the hard drive has switched IDE channels... anyways, im not sure if anyone out there can help, (hopefully?) but if anyone out there can, i would GREATLY appreciate it...
this problem is driving me nuts~! http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
