check your hardware first
do you have a light on the hub, where the cable from that nic is plugged in?
can another pc on the lan ping you?

What exactly is your network connected to? Another PC? A cable modem? A hub?
It's probably a routing problem.

You need to add your isp domain and DNS servers to /etc/resolv.conf
domain yourispdomainname
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # isp DNS 1
nameserver xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx # isp DNS 2

ok, I had the same problem on my in-house network.
The problem was that I hadn't assigned an ip address to my pc, and I hadn't let the network computer know what address I was assigning either. Make sure you are not being ignored by the dns and network.
