I have a problem getting my Geforce 3 to work on my Mandrake 8.0. After installing everything and when configuring x it is detected as a nvidia geforce 2 DDR.. that ok with me. Thinking that i could install the newer drivers and get it to work. But when i boot into 8.0 the graphics get corrupted, and things are missing, and as soon as i press anyting it freezes. What ami doing wrong??

Thanks

I think you may need to upgrade to X 4.1.0 with a Geforce3. Mandrake 8 comes with either 4.0.3 or 4.0.2, cant remember which one. Its a pretty painless upgrade though. Go to www.xfree86.org (http://www.xfree86.org) and download the binaries for your version of glibc, I think you'll want the glibc 2.2 versions, but its always a good idea to grab the Xinstall.sh script and run Xinstall.sh -check first which will tell you what version to use. Read the 'Install' file on the X download page to see which binaries are required and which are optional as well a description of what each contains. Put everything you downloaded in the same folder, then from CLI cd to the folder you downloaded them to and su to root. Run 'sh Xinstall.sh' and the installation will start. Other than the first question it asks just stick with the default answers (so you'll just be hitting 'Enter" alot) and when its done you'll have a fresh installation of X 4.1.0.
After that you can install the new Nvidia drivers, make the changes to your XF86Config-4 file (add Load "glx" and change the driver entry from "nv" to "nvidia") and you should be all set.

Thanks for the quick response. The only problem is how do i install anything if it freezes seconds after login?? I thought of installing mndrake 7.2 since it doesnt freeze.. and then install the driver from there and upgrade to 8.0 after that... bad idea?

Thanks

Sounds like you're booting to GUI. If thats the case an easier solution is to type linux 3 at the boot prompt when you boot up which will boot you into CLI instead of X. From their you can try to fix X and change your default runlevel so you always boot to CLI. Just change the line 'id:5:initdefault:' in your /etc/inittab file to 'id:3:initdefault:' and you'll boot into CLI by default. Once you fix X you can change it back if you'd like, but lots of stuff in linux is better and faster from CLI.
Either way you will most likely need to upgrade to X 4.1.0 to get your Geforce3 up and running.

I use Mandrake 8 and have a GeForce 3.... it was detected as a GeForce 2... but works just beautifully..... no X upgrade needed. Installed the nvidia drivers and I was in UT heaven in a matter of minutes!!! :)
