O.K.

I just installed Linux on my system. When I go to boot up, it runs through the boot sequence and lands me at a command prompt where it wants my host I.D. and password.

After inputting this information, I'm left stuck at a command prompt. Question: How do I get to a GUI interface from here? Did I install everything correctly?

to start the X windows system, type startx [Enter]. But I really need to know what distro you used, some don't have X http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/frown.gif

Yah, post your distro. Also, did you configure X during install? You may want to try running XF86Setup - be sure the X server you need for your card is installed, the vga16 X server, and XF86Setup itself. Don't start with the default config, and you should be able to get a good config file almost every time, if you just take the time and go thru each screen and pick reasonable settings.

Once you have X configured for your card, you can start it by running startx.

The Distribution is Redhat

if startx doesn't get you prime results, you'll want to run Xconfigurator. Also, you can change it so that X will start on bootup.

Startx worked.

Now how do I run xconfigurator? xf86setup didn't work.......

Secondly, my current video configuration places the right border of applications (and taskbar menu) borders outside of my screen.
How do I fix this?

Please define how xf86setup didn't work.
As for the second part, it sounds like you're trying to support a resolution that doesn't fit your monitor too well. I believe that you can load xconfigurator at the command prompt just by typing it's name (and pressing enter). it will help you to set up your desktop properly.

Its case sensitive so make sure you type XF86Setup and not xf86setup.

XF86Setup and xconfigurator give me a "command not found" message.

Again, I'm using Redhat's distribution.

Note - it's Xconfigurator, with a capital X

Also, xf86config works.

Try the commands while your logged into your root account, maybe that will work.

O.K. xf86config, all lower case, worked. However, it's asking me for specific questions on peripheral devices that work fine. I chose the defaults for these questions.

Later, it asks me about my monitor refresh rate info. I don't have this info being that I don't have my manual. Can't I do this in a way that skips such a "wizard"? I'd rather just find the file that contains my display settings and change these numbers instead of being asked 20 questions.
