I was happily running the X window for almost a week when I had to boot back in Windows. When I re-booted in Linux (MD7.2) after typing startx I got nothing but an error message. I do not remember the whole error message but I believe it was saying something about explicitelly killing the X server (which I don't remember doing).
Anybody any ideas on how would I bring back my X windows,
Thanks,
kowalsky

I guess I'm in runlevel 3 because I did not check the option of starting X at boot. So, usually I get the prompt and I login as one of the users and I stay with the command line until I need to something I don't know how to do it from the command line (or I just need a text editor) and I type startx. It worked everytime except this morning (I would try to reboot, but I believe this is just a windows inherited bad habit). I'll post the whole error message when I get home,
Thanks,

humm...
i think i have gotten around this by blowing away, err backing up my .xinitrc and other X startup files and then deleteing the ones in my home directory.

OK,
close to the end in /var/logs/XFree... is Fatal server error: could not open default font 'fixed'.
Is my problem clearer now?
Thanks a bunch,

Pbharris' solution worked when I had this problem once; give it a try if you haven't already.
If no user, including root, can startx, also try deleting (oh yeah...backing up)your XF86Config file (and any symlinks to it) and re-running Drake's X config program.

As far as the font error message goes, I'm not sure. It's been part of the error spewage I've gotten in some X crashes, but my gut feeling has been that it was a side effect rather than the cause. Could be wrong though...

Guys,
thanks a bunch but I have too many users to try and fix this on a user basis (if I understood this correctly)...
I'd rather re-install X from scratch. Is there a way to re-install X from the MD7.2 CDs?
Also, how do I run Drake X config prog from the command line (just out of curiosity)?
Thanks a lot,
