I'm running Mdrke on a separate hard disk from doze. It boots just fine etc but I go to configure the dial up stuff it presents a bunch of ethernet drivers none of which is the one I'm using. I'musing a Netgear NIC along with the supplied driver(FA311 & FA312) that was provided with the verizon DSL package.
you can't get more generic than that. So now what? Thanks in advance
I'm not familiar with Verizon's setup, but I am using an FA-311 with my cable modem. The 311 should use the natsemi.o module. Is that the driver Verizon supplied you? If not, it can be found here (http://www.scyld.com/network/ethercard.html).

Don't trust that the driver is correct; at the time I bought my card, Netgear themselves were shipping the wrong driver with the card. ;)

It depends ...
if you're computer is connecting straight into the ADSL RJ-45 connector (normally they come in, take your phone socket and muck it up so that it also has an ethernet connector on it), then you should be fine. Mandrake has an option during the network setup thingy that says ADSL Line, and has something to do with PPPoE (Point to Point Protocol over Ethernet), and that should let it work fine.
If that doesn't do it, then you probably connect into a router with DHCP, in which case use the local network option or something like that to have it get an IP and stuff direct from your router.
If you've got a static IP, then just use that option (there's something along those lines) instead of DHCP, and give it your info. I've got a netgear card as well, and it worx very nice.

Verizon uses PPPoE, and the Linux PPPoE client is called Roaring Penguin (there are others, but RP seems to work the best). RP comes with the latest versions of Mandrake, but you can also download it directly from http://www.roaringpenguin.com/pppoe/ . There's some good instructions on that site for installing and configuring it.
When you run the setup, you need to enter your Verizon user name, password, and specify the DNS server IP addresses that Verizon uses. You can get the DNS IP's from running winipcfg.exe in windows 9x, and clicking on 'more info'.
There are lots of posts dealing with NIC install, and PPPoE configuration here, just do a keyword search. Also, check out www.dslreports.com (http://www.dslreports.com) if you haven't yet. They have discussion forums for both Verizon and Linux.
