Ok...I've given up trying to fix my problem with the CD (the install tells me that the CD is not a Linux-Mandrake Installation CDROM). So, here's my new question:
I've freed up enough space on my FAT partition to download all of the files. Can I somehow install Linux directly from the hard drive? I have a seperate partition already setup as Ext2 with nothing on it. How do I go about installing from the hard drive? Thanks for the help.

Sure, make a directory called Mandrake, put the RPMS and base folders inside that, put the files where they belong, boot from an installation floppy and put in the location..the drive and the partition I mean and it should kick right in. :)

It is going to be some more kind of slow to download all those rpms though, are you sure you wouldn't just rather do an ftp install? :p
Well, the problem with an ftp install is that I have a laptop, and my internet connection is through cable which goes through a PCMCIA laptop...something that is near impossible to configure to install from Linux-Mandrake. I can download really fast though since I'm the only person on my node (have hit max speeds of 5.5Mbps).
Do I use the hd.img file when booting the installation floopy?

Understood, I remember seeing a man page for just the thing you are talking about with the pcmcia card and cable modem. I never got it to work well on mine. I am also the only one on my node, though I haven't gotten those speeds yet, I usually dodge along at around 3.3, I'm very happy indeed, FTP install of Redhat took less time than off my cd(course it's only 16x). Congratulations on that bandwidth though, impressive. ;)

Just remembered, have you got a serial to rj45 adapter? I know you can set it up through that and it is beaucoup fast.
Nope...never even heard of a serial to RJ45. Doesn't serial go at 9600bps? In any case, I don't plan on buying one. I'll just download the files from windows and install from the hard drive with a boot disk. Thanks for the help.

It's just a serial to 802.3 transciever, don't know how much they cost, we have a butt load of them. We use them to connect terminal or chain to hubs, old stuff, but useful for different stuff. You can adjust the speed of your serial port, 9600 being default. We use the ones made by (allied telesyn)Centrecom, but there are better ones out there(meaning smaller). Just taking a shot at it for you. Good luck, you could always try the man for pcmcia broadband ftp installs.
