For three days I have been trying to deal with Mandrake 7.1 and configuring my cable modem. I don't have a static ip address.
In the networkconf, 1. What goes in the Hostname + domain? 2. What goes in Primary name and domain? 3. What goes in Search of Name server? When I check the winip config the only name I get is DEFAULT for host name and that doesn't work. Please Help. I have the DNS,netmask, gateway and IP address.
You need to contact your ISP or your network administrator and have them supply you with the needed information.

better yet, check in your networking settings in control pannel, somewhere under the adapter or the protocol should be the collected works of everything you need http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif hope this helps... otherwise, I dunno, contact your ISP

Mandrake doesn't load DHCP as default so you need to go into DrakConfig and load it...UNLESS you configured a cablemodem when you installed.
Then basically DHCP should get all that information from your ISP...all by itself.
I had a similar problem but where I got messed up is by changing my NIC. Some ISP's software will read the MAC address of the NIC and _ONLY_ connect with that one.
I went nuts for over a week till I found that bit of info out. Now it works like a dream.

I had to get @Home to tell me what the IP was that they assigned me in their DCHP server. You basically have this IP for 6 months or more even though they call it a dynamic IP. Get that from your ISP and then put it in your IP address section and disable DCHP. Also get your DNS numbers and your Gateway numbers. That should work. And then six months down the road you'll need to call them back. Have fun!

Try running winipcfg in Windows if you have it. That was one way I got the necessary info to set up my cable.
