in order to configure/setup this modem properly i will need to remove the current internal modem , correct?
what information will i need to note down for installation of a new external modem?

No need to remove the internal modem. Just point whatever app you will be using to the correct /dev/ttyS? file. For Windows users: COM1 is /dev/ttyS0, COM2 is /dev/ttyS1 and so on. So if you for example would use KPPP to dial into your ISP, you would choose /dev/ttyS0 if your modem is connected to COM1.

And btw, there is no need to "install" an external modem in Linux, as long as you've got the serial driver up and running (which you must certainly have if you haven't been messing with the kernel http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/wink.gif), just plug the modem in and then use it. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/smile.gif
