Just some basic stuff I think...

1. I have a laptop and when I shutdown (init 0) it doesn't turn the computer off. If I'm not mistaken, apm is enabled in the kernel. I think it's something in the programming, but I'm not sure. How could I even check the kernel for this? I can't find a decent HOWTO for a kernel recompile and I don't think I have xconfigure installed.

2. I can't run netscape as root!!! Not that I'd want to regularly, but still, it'd be nice to have the option. It's not a permissions thing, it actually has to do with Netscape itself.

3. Debian is awesome :-) Try it out if you haven't already. Thanks guys.

I tried Libranet (strictly Debian based) those last days.
Netscape doesn't run as root either but that's a security feature not a bug!
If you run it from xterm, you'll see the message.

2. It's a security thing.

1) If you decide to recompile your kernel, the kernel-HOWTO is @ http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Kernel-HOWTO.html . I'm not sure what the problem is (or if recompiling your kernel will help), but it's worth a shot.

2) Yeah, running netscape as root is *asking* for security problems.

3) Agreed. http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif

I know the Netscape thing is a security feature, but I don't like it. I think it should be my decision thank you :-) My computer works for me damn it, not the other way around.

That kernel HOWTO is the one I've looked at before. It didn't help me much at all to be honest. Any other documentation?

Also, two other problems...

I get a "recursive error 1" whenever I try to install Gaim.

and... when I try to run bbpager it says that the client isn't privilaged to access the X server or something like that. ???

Thanks guys, this board is great.
