I have a CMI-8330 Chip on me souncard. I've set it up using sndconfig, but if I play a sound it would just make a "didt" sound, or a MP3 files, several "didt" sounds?
what is going on?

Thunderbird750 11-18-2000, 03:14 PM What distribution do you have? When you went thru sndconfig, what did you pick (or what did sndconfig identify for you)? Thunderbird750 11-18-2000, 03:23 PM An alternative to direct drivers is ALSA. If you can't get a specific driver working for your sound, you may want to consider ALSA The chipset you mention is listed for some cards in the ALSA hardware list: http://www.alsa-project.org/~goemon/ See NHF: http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/hardware/southbridge_alsa.html (while it is for southbridge, it has some generic advice and pointers as well) markma 11-18-2000, 05:22 PM sndconfig identified it as CMI-8330 Chipset. Under windows, the SB16 Driver works. Thunderbird750 11-18-2000, 08:09 PM On the ALSA hardware page, there's a link to a CMI-8330 page. You may find more up-to-date linux drivers. http://www.cmedia.com.tw/doc8330.htm You can also try selecting the soundblaster16 options under sndconfig; it may work. My southbridge is supposedly sb16 compatible, but that didn't work for me. If these don't yield a working solution, try the ALSA. markma 11-18-2000, 10:47 PM Were you able to access http://www.cmedia.com.tw ? I cannot. Thunderbird750 11-19-2000, 10:30 AM Sorry, in the middle of posting the following last night, my browser crashed...try again! Yes, I could get to the web site. I wandered around a bit, and for that chip set they seem to be recommending OSS. OSS is, if I understand correctly, similar to ALSA, but is fee based; whereas ASLA is GNU licensed (no fee). They also recommended you contact the card manufacturer for drivers. If you know your card manufacturer, they may have a specific driver. If you can't find the manufacturer, I'd try ALSA. justlinux.com
