Installed RH7.0. Started X, panel flicks on and off then disappears. Tried to start panel from terminal and get a segfault. Tried to install Helix Gnome and got this error:

gtkhtml-WARNING **: Couldn't find keybinding file -- /gnome/share/gtkhtml/keybindingsrc.emacs

Then thought it might be because of the version of XFree86 I have. So I downloaded and installed the newest version of that. Installed fine but when X started, XSM loaded be default. So no go on that. Please can someone give me some direction here. I'm dual-booting Win98/RH7.0 on Dell Inspiron 5000e, ATI Mobility 16Meg. Thanks

I setup an EXACT IDENTICAL system, win2k and linux, i tried redhat, did dig it, the display was all fuzzy in the middle and over lapped at the fuzz line.
this is what I did...
I installed slackware 7.1, configured the xircom nic, downloaded the cvs XFree 4.0.1c(XFree 4.0.2 source will work now)
and compiled the sucker. it took over an hour to do with 128mb ram, an 700mhz pumping that puppy!
but after i compiled X, ran xf86config, selected a window manager... i was running the sucker @ 1400x1024@32bpp. i think that was the res, i dont remember since its not my laptop, but the important thing is, i got it working. slackware is more fun to learn on as well. =)

Thanks for the reply. Well I got the flickering panel taken care of by installing the latest HelixGnome using their install script. And I was able to get my hardware setup to use my cable modem service. Now comes video issues.

I actually installed XFree86 v 4.0.2 a couple of days ago. Well after I followed the instructions (not saying that I did that exactly correct) and rebooted XSM was used as my default windows manager. And at that point I had no idea what to do. Now I know that with the hardward I have (ATI Rage Mobilty) my screen will support 1400X1050, from discussions from eGroups. So I'm planning to reinstall Redhat 7 again...to try to get it working.

Now is there any special process? I mean I use the workstation install, let RH choose the best screen resolution and depth. Then I imagine I would install XFree86 v 4.0.2. This is where I'm stuck. Can you offer some key steps and configs? Thanks again.

IGNORE THE PREVIOUS REPLY...

Alright well i updated to XFree 4.0.2 and set my windows manager to use Sawmill. So EVERYTHING works great except for my resolution. Right now my resolution is set at 1024x768 but I can't seem to get it any higher (1400x1050 being the highest I've read people have configured it). Can you send me your XF86Config file ... thanks ... my quest continues

PLEASE IGMORE THE PREVIOUS MESSAGE AS WELL!!!

I finally works. Turns out the whole time I was editing XFree86Conf when I should have been editing XFree86conf-4. And the resolution is beautiful!!! 1400x1050 at 16bit depth. Now I gotta keep from going blind. Thanks for your help though.
