modem problem

when i start kppp i get the message initializing modem and then nothing else happens. when i querry modem all the ATI lines are empty. this seems wrong. what should be in there ? where can i find this information ?

Check the modems section (http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/HOWTO-INDEX/hardware.html#HWMODEMS) of the linuxdocs.org site and see if you might have a "Winmodem". Only a few of the mfgs of them have released drivers.
