Okay so I install the 5.78e for lucent it istalleded and recognized I also rpm no problems it now recognizes modem on query
it dials up no promblem links up no promblem
kinda low tho 31.2 works about 2min the I get and error The pppd daemon died unexpectedly exit status 16 see man pppd for explanation of error code or take a look at the kppp. kppp got no clue.At that point it says unknown host what ever site on I'm on any help would be appreciated.I did not compile kernal.Not sure how to.That Linux-Mandrake 7.2 full.

Can you ever browse when connected? If not then you are not properly connected. Check you setup and make sure you have the proper username. I have earthlink so it is in the format:
ELN/username
I have seen others that might use:
ISP/username@isp.net or username@isp.net

Also does your ISP use chap or pap for authentication? These all might cause those symptom if you got it wrong.

Checkout the NHF for compiling a kernel. I have a LT modem in my notebook and it dials out fine with a 2.4 kernel. I will usually get a 3-4.5kb/s download with it, which is fairly normal if a bit slow for a 56k modem.
