apparently the registration for LNO is down, i received the following from someone that needs some help but can't post , if anyone has some ideas, please help this dude, thanks :)

I have a small problem in Red Hat 7.2. I have
onboard sound, C-Media CMI8738. According to Red Hat
website, this chip is supported and compatible.
However, I have problems playing any sound (Audio CD
plays through CD Player, but nothing else). XMMS just
hangs if I press play.

When I use "sndconfig", it detects the sound
chip/card, but no test audio plays...just hangs at
that part.

When I first boot, I get a informational message
saying that '/dev/dsp' can't be opened, that the
resource is busy or not available.

Please help me to get my sound to work. Thank you.

It sounds like you might have an IRQ conflict between your soundcard and another device.
Is your sound card ISA?
Check to see if your sound card has jumpers to set the IRQ and memory address.
You want to make sure that they dont conflict with another device (check the bios for device IRQ's and also check other ISA cards.
Hope this helps,

I had a similar problem on a different onboard chipset. I have the Ensoniq ES1373, which is a Digital sound card. I was unable to figure out how to get Linux to use Digital output, so I took the Digital cable off, and used the Analog interface on my speakers, and everything worked fine.

Alternatively, if you haven't already, the ALSA project has some helpful hints:

Might want to look into setting the irq for the sound chip in the bios... You might be able to get around any irq conflicts that way.

ALso, read your /var/log/messages file, it'll be long but you might be able to see if there is a conflict of some sort, or if drivers aren't loading correctly.

Have you reinstalled and get the same problem? Or is this still your first go at it...
