Hello. Last week I installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 that I obtained from a friend onto an AMD K6-2 500mhz system. I only did the default workstation install and when I booted up after the install I found out that I had no sound(among other things). After researching a bit I found out that I probably need to activate these things in the kernel and recompile it. The info I had said all I needed to do was the command: make xconfig. Every time I do, I get a message that says somethgin like "No Target to make" and I'm put back at the prompt. Is there something I'm missing? Do I need to be in a special subvolume for this to work? I'm kind of lost and could use any help anyone might throw my way. I really like what I've seen of linux so far but without sound and some of the other things it's just not a very useful system to me.

Thank you in advance.

In Mandrake,

Run either sndconfig or soundconfig from a shell not from x.

Two points:

1) Mandrake is sooo user friendly that the above fix will most likely work.

2) In order to make xconfig, you need to be in the source directory for linux.

Follow this nhf (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/kernelcomp.html)
from this page (http://www.linuxnewbie.org/nhf/intel/compiling/index.html). But again, Mandrake is sooo user friendly, step one should work for you.
