I have been trying to get my lucent chip powered winmodem working. No luck. I recently went on a business trip with my laptop from work. They lent me a U.S.Robotics external modem.
Well, they haven't asked for the modem back yet, so I hooked it up to my Linux box.
I was online in no time, but I had to leave to go to a b-day party.
When I booted back up I got a message saying that ppp wasn't supported, compiled in or module. How TF??
When I tried to recompile, I must have changed the wrong setting somewhere, because boot hung with a kernel panic. It said that root wasn't mounted.
I tried recompiling and must have screwed something else up because boot hung with a blank screen!
Any ideas or is to general of a question?

Sounds serious.. Why don't you boot into your linux with bootdisk and try recompile your kernel? This time make sure that PPP is installed as module. If PPP still not working, something must be wrong with your pppd. look for a latest PPP on your distro ftp site http://www.linuxnewbie.org/ubb/biggrin.gif I hope this might help you

Well, last night I booted with the boot disk. Didn't have time to recompile, but I worked on ppp scripts.
Now I can sometimes connect with kppp as root but not as user (pppd daemon dies unexpectedly, the poor thing). I cannot connect from the command line. I cannot connect in Gnome.

I'm here from Linux! I had to use terminal based login. Must be something wrong with my script.
